Dear Sir,

Our client specification states that SA-350 Gr.LF2 is NOT acceptable for tubesheet and flat channel covers. But I do not understand the basis of this statement. Can anyone explain?

Appreciate your expert advice.

Thanks in advance.

Vessel7,

Maybe it is just a Client preference. Why not ask your Client? And kindly share in this forum if you get a reply.

For ASME VIII-1 code of construction, SA-350 Gr. LF2 can be used as tubesheet material. There's even an ASME interpretation about it...

Interpretation: VIII-1-89-80
Subject: Section VIII, Division 1, SA-350
Date Issued: February 15, 1989
File: BC89-036

Question: May SA-350 be used as a tubesheet material in a heat exchanger to be fabricated and stamped in accordance with the requirements of Section VIII, Division 1?

Reply: Yes.

Thanks doct9960 for your quick reply with ASME interpretation.

I will certainly let you all know once I get the feedback from our client.

Basically, this requirement has come from an Offshore Oil & Gas operator.

If anyone has got an idea re the subject above, please share.

Thanks again.

Vessel7, some years ago I had seen a paper from one of the big E&C's (disremember who) discussing the lack of fracture toughness as measured by Charpys in thick SA-350-LF2 tubesheets. The values in the center of thickness of actual forgings were quite low. This E&C therefore did not allow SA-350-LF2 for tubesheets, and as I recall required SA-266 instead.

Your client may have similar concerns.

Regards,

Mike

Perhaps a better place to post would be the "Boiler & Pressure Vessel" forum ???
