If I specify A193 Grade B8 which is Carbide Solution treated and strain hardened, can I still galvanize it since heating after strain hardening is not permitted.

Why would you want to? Galvanizing is typically done for (atmospheric) corrosion resistance, which type B8 has an abundance of w/o any treatment.

Yahoo,
The zinc will cause contamination and could lead to corrosion cracking of the austenitic stainless steel components, when this two materials would come in contact. Any contact of SS with zinc should be avoided;- that includes even paint containing zinc, which accidentally may come from the painted carbon steel components located in vicinity of the stainless steel components.

Actually, the damage mechanism is liquid metal embrittlement of the austenitic stainless steel.

metengr,

Are you saying that gr2vessels is incorrect about the zinc containing paint and contact between zinc and stainless steel?

Hot dip galvanizing or brazing or having molten zinc contact austenitic stainless steel can result in cracking caused by the failure mechanism known as "liquid metal embrittlement". I had mentioned this above as more of a clarification.

Yes, I understand, but how would zinc paint or say a galvanized bolt in contact with stainless steel cause a problem?

hokie66;
If you are using a zinc-rich paint versus a galvanized bolt in contact with stainless steel stud, the only problem I see will be adhesion of the zinc-rich coating to the B8 stud material. Why worry about this problem? I would not apply any coating if it is not necessary. A galvanized bolt in contact with stainless steel is fine.

Thanks, metengr. I only asked the question because a previous poster recommended avoiding any zinc/stainless contact. As I have sometimes specified stainless anchors for galvanised handrail posts, I wondered.
