I want to install and MOV valve and I need to find a way to calculate an adequate closing time for the valve in order to avoid surge pressure.

Please note that the line is made of carbon steel, the size is 8", the fluid is diesel, the line length is at least 40m, the pumping pressure is about 5kg/cm2, the max. allowable pressure is 10.5 kg/cm2 and the flow is about 500m3/hr.

Any ideas??

If you see fluid mechanics chapter, you will notice equation for water hammer. According to this equation, after filling up all values given by you, valve closing time should not be less than 0.85 second to avoid surge pressure of 10.5 bar.

Thank you.

How can I find this "fluid mechanical chapter"?

You should be able to find this out in any of Fluid Mechanics book of Mechanical engineering trade.
