Thanks BigInch! The BLS is generally trustworthy, I've found. I didn't know about the tables you posted.

Best to you,

Goober Dave

Quite depressing for me in light of the pay cut I would have to take if we relocated from Calgary to Texas.
That said, thank you for a very informative and valuable link.

I don't see Calgary. I guess that's not in Texas. So NOW you'll have to tell us the percentage.

And your tax rate.

all the canadians I know are glad to leave Calgary and move south. exchange rate, taxes and benefits should be compared. don't forget to add in your winter heating bill. it might not be the paycut you expected.

Yep absolutely zero chance of this Calgary based mining engineer even thinking about a move down south if these salaries are a true representation of the state of play down south. Taxes and real estate are very reasonable in Alberta, the weather is actually very easy to take, generally a very high quality of life, almost zero liklihood of earthquakes , tornados , hurricanes, attacks by wild animals / snakes etc. My winter heating bill is almost certainly less than your air conditioning electricity bill in your summer, and good ole AAA prime USDA beef doesn't hold a candle to steaks from Albeta raised cattle.

Guess the gun laws are too strict.

miningman,

Those were my thoughts as well. Thanks for the point about the southern air conditioning bill offsetting the northern heating bill. I considered that a wash. As for water, I am on a well, so as long as the aquifer is good, I pay zero for water where I am at (apart from through infrastructure / property taxation). The rest of the bills are comparable. The two biggest issues are taxes and health care / insurance. My biggest fear about moving to the States is that getting sick basically means going broke and losing everything you own (if you choose to live, that is). Real estate in Texas is much more affordable than here in Alberta, based on my investigations when I was down there. But, once the house and property are bought, the health care costs (whatever they might be) come out of net income, and the average gross income before taxes, according to the Bureau Of Labor Statistics numbers, appears to be about 40% lower than here.

As for the guns, the weather here is so cold that for six months of the year, most guns don't work anyway, and the rest of them are too difficult to operate with mittens on. (The trigger guards have to be specially modified.) Plus, if you walked 100 metres with a gun up here in January, you would probably freeze to death and wouldn't be discovered until the spring melt, typically occurring some time between May and July.
