Hello,

For a steel building, what determines the outside-to-outside dimension of the foundation, in other words in the picture shown? How do you determine the appropriate dimensions for the distance labeled in "?" Is there a code requirement regarding this (US/CA) ?

It depends on what sort of foundation you're actually providing. I've generally only done these types of buildings on deep foundations, and therefore that outside face of concrete was determined by the architectural intent.

However, for shallow foundations like your example, I would anticipate that would be determined by the overturning capacity of the foundation to resist the applied loading.

Yea I'm with Jayrod soil bearing pressure and overturning stability are the requirements.

They can be satisfied with little to no offset, but its more efficient to extend the footing beyond the girt line.
