Hi All,

I am being asked by my Civil/Structural contractor if they are allowed to use BS EN 10025 Gr 275 JR in lieu of AS3679.1 grade 300. The structure is being built as per AS4100: 2020 and for me it isn't clear as per AS4100 if we can use the BS EN 10025 Gr 275JR in the design of AS4100, As per Section 2 of the AS4100 it is not clear if I can allow this and if I can use the 275MPa yield strength.

The dimensions between the BSEN and the AS 3679 are very close so there is no concern there, only concern is on the usage of the 275 MPa yield strength in compliance with AS4100. The BSEN Material will have a full material certificate reporting on all variables required by the As4100 Code.

Thanks for the help

The Australian Steel Institute has a tech note about this.

I'd say the right way is to prove conformance with Grade 250 and design on that basis. You might look into 3rd party certification if unsure (of process or quality). Eg if you receive a material report rather than a certificate of conformance,
you could be the person who unwittingly certifies conformance. Keep in mind that anyone with a computer can produce a conforming certificate. No steel testing necessary.
