hallo.
what exactly is the 'brine filtration'that's done on oil rigs? what is being filtered and why?

In oil refineries refineries brine water is separated from crude oil through dessalters where brine waters are emulsified with the oil and than trough electrical discharges and injection of chemical desemulsifiers waters are then decanted. The reason of brine water separation is to avoid corrosion and fouling down stream dessalters processual equipment.

Another reason for brine filtration on oilrigs is because of economical reuse of water and environment protection. The site bellow maybe will help you.

"Brine" can also be the fluid that is used in a well to run a completion after a well has been drilled. In order to make sure that this completion brine is as clean as possible (which means no solids) it's not unusual to filter the brine as it is pumped into the well.
