Bridle Rolls

I was wondering if I could get a good definition on what bridle rolls are. I am interested in how they apply tension to the system and if it is possible to use them to have a part of the system tensionless. Any information would be help full along with any equations. I know this is a very broad question but I'm not having any luck on how they exactly work. Thank you
