My firm is working on a proposal for a power plant to be built in Brazil. I am having trouble finding applicable Brazilian Codes, especially in English. Does Brazil follow any international standard like IBC (International Building Code)? Is their building code based off of Eurocode like I have heard? Brazil's code's can be purchased from but it's in Portuguese and I can't find the applicable code and when I do, it's in Portuguese. Any suggestions?

I don't know about today, but back in the mid 80's when I was down in Brazil designing cement factory steel structures we all used the AISC code. And for concrete I saw a lot of designers using the AIC code.

For masonry design, the codes that were closely followed were the NCMA tentative standards for high rise building beginning the early 1970's.On a recent trip to Sao Paulo, a number of engineers said they used the U.S. masonry code (ACI 530), but "jokingly" said they used them better because they had more experience and education on the subject.

I think the is a local chapter of ACI. As far as the other materials and standards, my experience was definitely acceptance toward the similar American codes that were adopted by reference.

The project documents or any proposals should list the required standards to be referenced.
