BOM Tutorials

I have to confess that I have never used the BOM function in SolidWorks other than to use one of the standard BOM templates. I would now like to automate a custom BOM template for future work. Does anyone know of any free tutorials that cover customizing a BOM template? The help files are not very well organized in explaining the actual process and how to make and link custom properties and then to get them into a template. A tutorial or a good book would really help an old timer like me.
