Hello -
I am attempting to model the interaction between a bolt (which has a fillet radius connecting the bolt shaft to the bolt head) and an unchamfered washer during the preload torquing procedure - ie, there will be a sharp edge (due to washer) interference with the bolt fillet radius. I would rather not delve into a contact analysis for ease of modeling. Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks!

Well, you could treat the bolt as a knife, and the intersection between the chamfer and the washer will give you an area which is yielding (the area is a function of the depth of engagement of the thread), so you can generate a torque and a required axial load.

But personally, I think you are missing the point!

For simplicity's sake why don't you do a 2D axisymmetric analysis of the bolt and washer??
