Hi folks

There is a rack in work which is held by 6 bolts on both ends, if this is turned upside down and supported by only 4 bolts each end, how do i calculate if the 4 bolts will support the load.

The bolts are 19mm diameter and the load will be approx 3 pallets weighing at least 2100kg each

Thanks in advance.

Hi Killian12345

We need a sketch of you're actual rack including some dimensions on size, what the bolts are fastened into, where the loads are applied etc.

Every grade of bolt has it's allowable load stated somewhere, for instance an M16 grade 4.6 bolt will take around 34kn tensile & 23 Kn in shear
What you need to know is what loads are coming on the bolts

Why does this sound like a homework question? But, I'll give you the benefit of doubt; did you check your Shigley book?
