Ever forget something silly?

I cannot seem to remember the Rule oof Thumb for bolt hole distance from the edge of a plate. I know it for sheet metal work, but forget for hogging holes in structural shapes or plate.

I seem to recall it is 1-1/2 times the hole radius from the hole edge to the plate edge.

Any takers?

distance from bolt CL to edge is 2D
(which is the same as your 1.5D from the edge of the hole)

It might help to indicate your application.

"The distance from the center of a standard hole to an edge of a connected part shall be not less than the applicable value from Table J3.5 nor the value from Equation (J3-6), as applicable..."- from AISC ASD, J.9.

For 1" bolt, the value from the table is 1.75" for sheared edge, 1.25" for rolled, gas-cut, or saw-cut edges.

In other words, it varies some, depending on the code used, the load, the direction of the load, and the plate properties.

Stephne:

Is the AISC ASD, J.9. a structural design manual/handbook? If so, do you have the ISBN or know where to get the book if not extracts from it?

Thank you!
