What type of valves are typically used as block valves for crude oil pipelines? The few pipelines I've worked with have rising stem gate valves. we are looking to replace a number of existing gate valves on a line and have found the best pricing is for a ball valve. I'm hesitate to recommend the ball valve since I have never seen one used at a remote valve site. The valves must also accommodate an actuator for remote operation.

Ball valve have been used in pipeline appllication. Ball valves can be atuomated at less cost in most cases than gate valves since operation is 90 degree turn vs multiturn of a gate.
