I would like to black nickel plate over steel... for
aesthetics and electrical conductivity. Could someone
advise on the best source and any pitfalls.

Products Finishing magazine has an excellent website ( that I suggest you visit. They have a section called SUPPLIERS that will offer you a list of potential vendors. They have many archived articles with which you could peruse for information on the process. They also have sections called BOOKS and LINKS that should point you to other good sources of information.
