Formulation is often based on metered amounts of the appropriate components but asphalt and bitumen, bitumen emulsions etc. can also benefit from inline viscosity trim control. Most usually this is a continuous operation rather than a batch operation.
Meter blenders depend on formulating the emulsion based on a recipe and continuously blend the emulsion using ratio controller to maintain each flow in the correct proportion to the master stream.
Volumetric or mass flow ratios are both possible.
Viscosity is a useful indicator of quality and a final property so online viscosity measurement can be used for trim control.
Viscosity can also be used for heater control in spraying operations.
