Dear All,

During a randam inspection for the welding activites I found a big misalignment for a butt joint , more than 3.5 mm(according to AWS D1.1 the shall
not exceed 10% of the thickness of the thinner part joined, or 1/8 in) so please i would like to know the problemes that we can have if they don't repear this matter like the stress concentration...

As an option, research tapered joints as that may work.

It will have a considerable affect on the joint if it is under fatigue loading.

If it is a long joint your vessel shell thickness is effectively 3.5mm thinner. Potentially even thinner if the effects of the stress concentrations and bending stresses are considered.
