Hellow every one

What are the inspection requirements of pipe bevel angle? Basically my question is can we do grinding or perform filing on beveled/chamfered area when burr/chattering occurred during machining please let me know in the light of standard.

Thanks

Depends on what specification and quality documents are invoked on your particular project. I will say that "cleaning up" bevel faces is common practice for power piping, including grinding and weld build up where necessary.

Take a peek at Figure 12, CSA Z245.15. It's pretty much laid out in detail there.

I am talking about API 5L 44th edition. What are the bevel angle requirements in this particular standard when customer hasn’t submitted any thing about disposition of defects all the requirements are as per API 5L specification. We are experiencing a problem of rough surface on chamfered areas. And the third party inspector (TPI) deputed by purchaser is not allowing any type of grinding or filing on beveled surface areas. I want an expert advice of you guys to over come this problem

Thanks

Has the inspector given any reason to his denial?

What does the WPS allow for cleaning? Is the welding done to B31.3? API 1104? No matter which way you go, I bet that cleaning is a nonessential variable.

Cleaning the joint sounds like a reasonable request. Walk the inspector through the WPS showing him where cleaning is specified, and, if needed, where cleaning is either explicitly listed as a non-essential variable (Section IX, SMAW and GMAW at least) or omitted from the essential variables (API 1104, 5.4).

If the inspector won't yield, make a formal request for clarification requesting the chapter and verse of the applicable code that prohibits cleaning.

There is nothing in API 1104, 5.4.2.3 & 7.4 that would preclude the touch up of the bevel as you have indicated.

Thanks very much guys for helping me
but i am still unaware of the actuall requirements

Thanks

I think the responses have given as much as help as possible based on the info you have presented.

You need to read the applicable documents and determine the requirements that are relevant to your particular application. We have suggested a few standards and even given paragraphs within those standards.

Otherwise, I'm sure a hired consultant would be happy to help.

zebmahar,
Assuming that you are the manufacturer, there is nothing in API 5L to prohibit you from touching up the bevels as you have indicated. If your repairs cause the ends to be out of square or the bevel to be out of tolerance per the Purchaser's requirements, the inspector would be correct.
