Best practice to stop a threaded closure at a specific indexing

What is the best method for stopping a threaded closure at a specific alignment to the package?
 
Blunt start on the thread?

External fin/tab, like you find on antifreeze jugs?

Do you need it to lock against torque in both directions, or just stop at a controlled location when tightening the closure?
