Beam Minimum Width ,b 1

As per SMRC condition minimum beam width is 10" , also b/d>=.3 . But my question is there any condition on beam minimum width depending beam length .As per Susil kumar min of ( 50b or 250b^2/d) . So if i choose b=1ft d= 4ft ,maximum span length can be 50 ft. Can any one clarify this issue and give me a few more reference on beam minimum width depending on span . Thanks in advance [highlight #3465A4][/highlight]

Based on the equations cited, I'm guess that they pertain to lateral torsional buckling when the beam in question is unbraced by an integrally poured slab.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.
 
For an I-beam, its good practice to make H/B < 2 for the following reasons:

a) The buckling reduction factors are usually less onerous (this is the case for the Eurocodes anyway).
b) Tall and narrow things like to topple over - not good for H+S!
 
Concrete grade beams do not always follow the above prescription. The width of a grade beam may be selected to match the thickness of the wall bearing on it. Eight inches is quite common in my neck of the woods although I have seen widths as little as six inches. Depths may be dictated by exterior grade and can be 48" or more. Sometimes, a grade beam is laterally braced by dowels from the grade slab but sometimes it butts up to a slab on the inside and retains earth on the outside.
