IMHO the quantity of a basic dimension should allways appear outside of the dimension box but Y14.5-2009 doesn't address this, only showing an example of a singular basic dimension where the basic dimension symbol is defined (¶3.3.4).
Is it allowable to include the quantity inside the box, or is it something that should be marked as wrong on a checkprint?
So far I have no basis for marking it wrong other than personal preference.

Thanks CH!
I have to admit I wasn't any less anal about the standards before I was a checker, and I've always had to be shown proof or reason before I would back down. ;-)

Look at figure 3-29. The angular spacing in the right view has the quantity in the basic box.
See paragraph 1.9.5: "Where used with a basic dimension, the X may be placed either inside or outside the basic dimension frame."

Didn't mean any disrespect, just friendly teasing.

BTW, should EQUALLY SPACED be placed in basic frame? Sometimes it's the only "dimension" applied. :)

No disrespect taken CH... maybe EQ SP (or the spelling of your choice) should be in the box.
Yes, Ben, I admit I've been a little rushed (lazy?) this morning. ;-)

ewh,

I don't care very much about this. I would be extremely reluctant to do anything other than what the CAD software does. SolidWorks puts that stuff outside the box.

ewh, my checker (back when I still had one) looked into this and either in or out of the box is permissible.

Sadly I can't for the life of me remember how we determined that - but use of search function on this site just determined ASME Y14.5M-1994 para 1.9.5 states this & that in fact you used to know this yourself ewh:)

CATIA V5 will put the qty either inside or outside of the basic frame, unless the CAD administrator has locked out the option.

mea culpa...
Yes, I had been aware of what is written in the standard, and I apologize for wasting everyones time. Being rushed is not a good excuse to ask others to do my homework.

Don't be so hard on yourself :)

I'm sure that now no-one visiting this forum will ever have a problem with the issue
