Hello!

I have been asked to design a braced wall which will experience wind loads. How would i go about designing these two members?

I have attached a crude sketch to show what im trying to do.

i completed civil engineering many years ago although never used any of the technical knowledge i had learned as i went straight into a site engineering role, so my skills are extremely rusty!

Thank you in advance for any help.

I think the bigger question is "Should you be doing this?". What is the purpose of the wall? What is consequence of failure? What are the materials? What code is this under? What are the anchorage conditions? Will the wall be subject to impact? (traffic)....Does the wall serve as a barrier of any type, other than to block wind? Have you considered that wind can come from any direction, not just from the left as shown in your sketch? Your connections (and structure) will be subject to stress reversals. Have you considered this?

The concept is simple, but the result can be complex, even for a simple wall.

It would probably be a lot more efficient just to get a local structural engineer involved. This is not something that you'll get designed for you through a website.

What is the spacing of the braces? What wind load are you designing for?

Is this really something you are designing or a PE or homework question?? If a PE question, this is fairly simple and I can help you with it. If this is a legit design question, see Ron's response above.
