Anyone know if there is a backwater (check) valve that can be installed directly on the drain of a sink? I did a very quick search on the internet, and looks like most of the valves are designed for the main sewage line heading out of the building. I have a particular application where I only care about preventing backflow to a particular sink. Any advice appreciated.

I've cross posted this in piping engineering as well.

The plumbing codes will not let you put a check valve on the drain from a sink.

What you might look at doing is indirectly connecting the sink drain to a floor drain. The floor drain would have to be located fairly close to the sink.

You bring the sink drain pipe to the floor drain and end it two pipe diameters above the opening. You can get funnel attachments for floor drain grates and locate the pipe inside the funnel, keeping the two pipe diameters distance from the floor drain grate.

Hope it helps.

Basically, I'm looking at how my brother, who is living on the bottom floor of fifty year old barracks, can cheaply prevent sewage from coming back up through the sink in his room. If there is any significant cost to the solution, he will likely not get any kind of resolution while he is still living there.

The military can be horribly slow. He sent me a portion of the email chain that has been generated so far regarding his issue, and right now, there seems to be more interest in who is actually responsible for the situation rather than how can they fix it.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the military, there are substantial jurisdictional issues, so he can't just go to the local tenant's rights board and get action in that matter.

Sounds like they should have put a backwater valve in the building drain during construction. This situation is exactly what they are intended to be used for.

Hope he gets it resolved.
