I recently had an engineer question me on a building that is being installed at an international airport on backwash wind design. I am not sure how to approach this.

The building is designed for the correct windspeed and exposure C. The only other factors that I could take this issue into account for is the Kz factors.

Is this truely necessary seeing that number one the windspeeds are actually monitered at airports so I rationalized that these conditions are already accounted for and most aircrafts do not have an engine startup till they are a certain distance from a building.

If anyone has experience with airport design please comment.

Thank you,

Recently had to design a structure in the backwash area, but the wind created was not the critical consideration. What will happen is picking up projectiles - small rocks, sand - and pelting the building. The FAA has info on developing this backwash area if you inquire.
