Dear Experts,

How to understand that the ASME B16. 5 flanges can be made from cast, forged, or plate materials covering carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel and non-ferrous alloys. So different materials with very differnt mechnical properties (allowable tress) can use the same szie and rating of the flange?
For example, SB-283 C70620: yield stress is 100.7 M/mm^2 at 65 deg.C, SA182F53: yield stress is 510 M/mm^2 at 65 deg.C. It seems losing the advantage of higher strength material.

B16.5 groups materials together Group 1.1, 1.2 etc. With press/temp for each group listed in tables.

B16.5 has 3 material groups. Groups 1, 2, and 3. Each group has sub groups. Groups 1.1, 1.2, ..., 2.1, 2.2, ..., 3.1, 3.2, ..., etc. Each of these subgroups have different pressure / temperature ratings.

Hint: class 150, 300, 400, 600, 900, 1500, and 2500 are identifications not actual pressures.

The text is very specific regarding the applicability of forging, plate, or casting materials.

If you search online you can easily find older editions of B16.5. The text is pretty straightforward. Give it a read.
 
You can't use same material for every process conditions and environment. And hence, different materials. It's up to use what material you want to use where.
