AWS D1.1 in table 4.5 item 32 doesn't clearly define the groove type. for example if we qualify a pqr with V groove do we have to qualify the U groove with another pqr again?

One PQR suffice grooves, (V, U, J's) as well as fillets and many other weld types.

does one pqr for X groove suffice V groove?

I take X groove to mean double V groove weld and V groove to mean single V groove. My response below is based on that interpretation.

IMO the PQR for the double V groove may be used to develop a WPS for a joint with a single V groove, provided:

1. the detail for the joint incorporating the single V groove conforms to Sections 3.12 or 3.13 and

2.other essential variables in Table 4.5 such item 27(see footnote 5) are in compliance..ie they do not go beyond limitations.

Are the welds in question CJP?

Hi GenB,

You stated that "One PQR suffice grooves, (V, U, J's) as well as fillets and many other weld types".

In D1.1, PQRs are required for non-prequalified joints.

I have a question for you if you do not mind because I too need clarrification of D1.1 Table 4.5 from time to time.

If the test plate had a single V groove weld, can the a PQR be used to develop WPSs for non-prequalified groove welded joints fabricated with other weld types (U, J, bevel etc)?
