Hello everyone

i'm a welding engineer predominantly working in ASME SEC IX. Recently we have received a job that requires the welding procedures to be qualified in AWS D1.1. we couldn't find clear cut what it says about multi process PQRs and possible type of WPS taken out of those, based on process.

Background: i'm having a PQR with three process (Root -GTAW, subsequent- SMAW, fillup & cover pass- SAW).

Ques 1: can i make a separate WPSs with each process, with in the process's respective essential variables complied? (we are doing like this in ASME SEC IX)

Ques 2: with the separate PQRs for each Process (GTAW, SMAW, SAW), can i make a single WPS that combines all these processes, complying all the respective essential variables?

where in the code(AWS D1.1) can i get answer for these questions?

Thanks in advance.

AWS D1 structural welding codes have no provisions for qualifying multiple welding processes using one test assembly. The thickness range qualified is based on the thickness of the test coupon used to qualify the WPS, not the thickness of the weld deposited (as is the case with ASME Section IX).

The other problem is that any existing PQRs qualified to ASME Section IX does not meet the criteria of AWS D1.1. Specifically, ASME Section IX does not include volumetric examination, the visual criteria does not meet AWS D1.1, and the bend test criteria of Section IX isn't as stringent as th structural welding code.

Best regards - Al
