Dear All,

I am working Pressure Vessel & Structure (EPC Company), I have an question. I have plan to qualified PQR(Based on AWS D1.1) for Position 2G,3G,4G for 1 WPS.
Welding Process, I Plan to use FCAW(GS) backing with weldmetal(Gouging) or base metal(Backing Strip). There is an advice from my friend to Qualified the PQR with 2 different Process without doing Backing SMAW+FCAW (Root+hot = SMAW & Fill & Cap = FCAW)
My Question are :

1. Can I combine 2 welding Process in PQR ? SMAW = root+hotpass, FCAW = fill+cap ? Since ASME allow it ASME IX QW-200.4(combination welding process) so how about AWS D1.1 3.6.1 allow to Joint WPS prequalified(clause 3) & WPS qualified Procedure(clause 4)but How about the PQR ? Please kindly advice

2. So AWS D1.1 3.6.1 combine Prequalified WPS and Qualified WPS means I have FCAW WPS and I combine with SMAW WPS within all the parameter so can I weld root and hot pass with SMAW and FIll+Cap with FCAW by combine Prequalified WPS and QUalified WPS with different welding Process ?

3. So my point here i make an summary can 2 welding Process combine in PQR, if can please kindly advice what basis i can do it ?

Sorry about my english,

Thanks & Regards

AWS D1.1 has no provisions that permit qualifying more than one welding process with a single test assembly. When qualifying a WPS per AWS D1.1 the qualification range of base metal thickness is based on the thickness of the test assembly. This is a departure from ASME Section IX where the range is based on the thickness deposited with each welding process, thereby permitting more than one welding process to be qualified using the same test assembly.

AWS does allow one to combine more than one PQR into a single WPS thereby allowing more than one welding process to be used to weld a joint. Don't forget that the range of alloys/grades qualified by a PQR are also limited and must be taken into consideration.

Dear GTAW,

Thankyou so much for given clarification for my question and it's very helpfull, but what about my question no 2 ?

Please kindly advice ?

Thank's & Regard's

WE17,
Al has answered your second question

"AWS does allow one to combine more than one PQR into a single WPS thereby allowing more than one welding process to be used to weld a joint. Don't forget that the range of alloys/grades qualified by a PQR are also limited and must be taken into consideration."

In summary
Q1 No
Q2 Yes
Q3 No

Don't worry about the English. Your English was good enough to convey your problem. We'll ask you more questions if we don't understand.
