In ASTM C 67 section 9 (Intial rate of absorption (suction) (laboratory Test)) how do you determine the net area in square inches of a brick that will be submerged? The concern is subtracting the area out for the holes in the brick accurately - any suggestions?

Since you are only submerging a small part of the brick in the test pan, you work with the flat area you are placing in the water. For the lab test, you measure the length and width to the nearest 0.05 inches and subtract out any cored areas (holes) in the brick, measured to the same accuracy.

You may use any shape, with or without the holes, as long as you accurately measure the flat area to be submerged.

Can you reccomend any certain methods for measuring the holes?
 
The most accurate way would be to weigh a brick, coat the brick with parafin, then determine its bulk specific gravity. Determine the density of the brick then divide by its weight and its thickness and you will have the net face area.

Since most brick cores are elliptical or nearly round, you can get pretty close by making several measurements and approximating its shape area by formulae.
 
can you elobrate on the WICK TEST for escertaining whether the cast stone is liable to cause efflorescence
