Hi

Anyone can advise how we can certify a forged nut as per ASTM A453 660.Because this standard only mentions the mechanical results of tested bar.But forged nuts will be having some different properties and not possible to do tensile testing. Is there any standard in ASTM which gives reference of testing of 660 nuts.

Why can't you machine nuts from forged Grade 660 bar?

Dear Metenger

We have purchased some nuts and supplier confirmed that nuts were manufactured by hot forging process. They have given test results of bars, but in this case that results will not be valid .So we have asked supplier to provide proof load results ,but standard ASTM A453 does not specifies any proof load testing of nuts.

Normally we are manufacturing these products by machining from bars.

If we have some standard reference which specifies the test on forged nuts then we need to follow that. Thanks for suggestion and comments in advance

Here are standards for similar products, though not exactly for grade 660:

ASTM A194/A194M–07 Standard Specification for Carbon and Alloy Steel Nuts for Bolts for High Pressure or High Temperature Service, or Both

ASTM A962/A962M–11 Standard Specification for Common Requirements for Bolting Intended for Use at Any Temperature from Cryogenic to the Creep Range

ASTM F606/F606M-14 Standard Test Methods for Determining the Mechanical Properties of Externally and Internally Threaded Fasteners, Washers, Direct Tension Indicators, and Rivets
