I have qualified a welder on a 2.5" pipe XXH strong in 6 G position. Per Sec IX if the deposited weld thk is more than 3 passes the welder is qualified for maximum thk. However my question what will be the minimum thk the welder is qualified to . Will it be 1/16 to unlimited.

The minimum weld deposit thickness will be based on the minimum thickness stated in the WPS for the welder performance qualification.

metengr,
Can you please advise where ASME IX specifies minimum requirements for welder qualification ?
Obviously 1.6 mm (1/16") is the minimum based on any WPS but I cannot see why minimum thickness would be noted on a Welder Qual Certificate when it is not an essential variable,

My comment pertained, although may not have been clear in my post, was that the minimum qualified is based on the range of any WPS the welder is qualified or will qualify to use. You are correct there is no minimum thickness as an essential variable for welder performance because it is expected the welder would use a qualified WPS for production welding and this contains a minimum deposit thickness.
