Referring to ASME VIII div.2 §4.12.11.1 Nomenclature what is 'b'?

For calculation of I1 = Moment of Inertia of strip thickness t1 (t1 = short side plate thickness)

b - unit width per cross section. In the equations for the areas, moments of inertia, and bending moments for all vessel configurations without external reinforcements are given for cross sections with a unit width

I'm confused, is this overall width of the cross section or is it a depth? What does it mean by strip thickness?

Hi,

It is the overall width of the cross section, depth has no meaning in this case.

When calculating the Moment of Inertia, (b*t^3/12), t is the section thickness and b is the section width and for the cases of non-circular vessels without external reinforcements, the Moment of Inertia shall be calculated for a strip with a width of 1.0.

See PTB-4, 4.12.1.

Thank you!!!! @IdanPV

Wow I can't believe I hadn't looked at at PTB-4.

best regards!
