I am studying for the lateral portion of the SE exam and I am confused with the ASCE 7-10 wind provision chapters 26-28. I'm in the bridge world so I don't deal with 7-10 but I was somewhat familiar with 7-05 and it's all different than what I was used to. What is the difference between the 3 chapters? It looks like different procedures, but how do you know which chapter you need to be looking in to determine the correct wind pressure?

The "procedures" and calculations are almost identical to 7-05 but simply re-arranged in a different order - separated by chapters that were an attempt to help with the use of the code.

Chapter 26 is always used - simply provides for determining the base wind pressure.

Main Wind Force Resisting System Wind Forces (MWFRS)
Chapter 27 is a directional procedure for Main Wind Force Resisting systems - MWFRS (i.e. for design of your floor/roof diaphragms and and main wind braces or moment frames)
Part 1 is the general/main procedure for all buildings - we typically use this.
Part 2 is a simplified procedure for simple buildings < 160 ft. in height - we don't typically use this method
Chapter 28 is a MWFRS method for low rise buildings - we don't use this.
Chapter 29 is a section for MWFRS on rooftop equipment, chimneys, tanks, etc.

Components and Cladding Wind Forces
Chapter 30 is for C&C wind forces
Part 1 is the general section for Low-Rise Bldgs
Part 2 is for Low-Rise Bldgs. but a simplified method (we don't use this)
Part 3 is for buildings > 60 ft.
Part 4 is a simplified method for buildings <= 160 ft. (we don't use this)
Part 5 is for open buildings
Part 6 is for rooftop equipment, chimneys, tanks, etc.

Chapter 31 - wind tunnel procedure used for larger, odd shaped buildings.

On the SE exam - some of the "simplified" methods may be a better way to go due to the time crunch.
