We have recently discovered that a lamination press in our workshop has asbestos as an insulation material between the platen and electrical heaters.
It is about 1/2" thick by about 5' square. Lamination pressure is around 10psi and temperature 150deg C

Would anyone be able to advise of a suitable substitute material?

Silica aerogel would work very well and is available in blocks. You could also try thermal insulation like you use in your roof (glass wool sheet). That works fairly well but won't insulate as well as the aerogel.
