I am puzzled by this. P1 and P2 are referred to as pressure components but the units are kN/m height.
How is PT converted to hoop tension?
Referring to AWWA D103 it would appear that this is the hoop tension and hence the stress will be PT/t .

If this is so then it should read;
P1 = impulsive hoop tension component, in kilonewton per metre height, etc.

I know API 650 and AWWA D103 and no idea for AS 2304.
Can you post the expressions to find P1 and P2 ?
AWWA expressions for impulsive and convective hoop forces for cylindrical tanks are ;

HTURKAK, here you are, Australia uses metric units.

Hi SDZ structural ,
I looked to the expressions that you have posted . There are some differences regarding the coefficients and notations . If the following assumptions are correct;
- The notation ( a) stands for acceleration , ( m/sec**2) ?
- Kp = a factor stands for probability ?
- AS 2304 uses strength design .(USD) ?

If the above assumptions / guesses are correct ;

- P1 stands for impulsive hoop force component ( kN/ m)
- P2 stands for convective hoop force component ( kN/ m)
- The design load combination should be linear
Ed= G+ EQ+ LL
- The live load in this case should be assumed hydrostatic load and hydrostatic hoop force Ph= 4.9*H*D * G ( similar exp. at API 650)
- In general , the hoop force is calculated at the bottom each course .
- The design hoop force would be Ed= Ph+P1+P2 ( kN/m , for E comb.)

I hope my guess help to get the concept.

Thank you.

There's several things in AS2304 that are less than clear.
