Why arrester+capacitor are connected to synchronous generator? Can someone explain the selection criteria of both special arrester and capacitor? Where can we install this couple away from the generator? Pls. give the distance as a ft. Which firms manufacture these products? Thanks.

The arrestor/capacitor combination is installed to provide surge protection for the generator stator winding. Suggest that you contact the generator manufacturer for specific recommendations. There are a couple of "usual" locations for the surge protection, namely -
- In the generator terminal compartment, if there is space available
- In the generator voltage transformer compartment, usually relatively close to the generator
Location closer to the machine is preferred, as this avoids the possibilty of voltage doubling due to reflected waves when there is an incoming surge.

See the archives as very good explanations exist under the topic of surge packs , I believe. Do a serach under " surge".

Suggestions:
1. Visit
and type Arrester under Product / Service. This will return Arresters: Surge with about 121 Companies that you may directly contact for details. They may also suggest some Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVSS), Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) filters, etc.
Locations of those devices depend on voltage levels involved.
