How can it be proven that using component links are easier on model size versus solid only usage?
NX 6 but that hopefully is not relevant.

With the cost of disk space, is this arquement really worth the time?

The best way to prove it is to build and save 2 assemblies with the same compoments, one using links, one using the solids. Then compare the size of the saved assemblies. Both assemblies must be built identically with the same steps and mating conditions. If you save X times while building Assy1, save X times while building Assy2. Every save will add to the file size because of revision history.

My feeling is you will see very little difference as an assembly file is made up of the mating relations and pointers to the component files. There may be some bits turned on or off to designate that the componet is a link or a solid.

OH. I had been informed quite a while ago that links were the proper technique both for file size and for load-up/refresh times.
Thanks

By "links" I assume you mean adding parts to your 'Assembly' as 'Components'. Yes, that is the preferred way. In fact, if you DON'T take that approach, NX won't even recognize your 'assembly' AS an Assembly. A collection of 'Solid' bodies is just that, a collection of solid bodies and is considered just another part 'model'.

Then there's the horror when you find out one of your "parts" had a rev change...

If what John says, Components versus imported files, then you will see a hugs difference in file size.

If you are using imported files, STOP NOW!!!!

Components are the only way to go and have been since V10!

Thank you all for the clarification. I may be an old fart, but I seem to be able to remember the important things!
