API650 Flush-Type Shell Connection

Hi all,

Need some help on Flush-Type Shell Connection. Do anyone have any experience on the connection between the shell plate, nozzle transition, and nozzle flange? As per API650 Fig. 5.14, its kinda confuse where one end of the nozzle transition is semi-oblong shape while the other end is a circular shape. Any advise will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It is not clear what your question is. If you are not building the tank, the fabricator/erector will design and fabricate the connection. If you are building the tank, I recommend hiring an experienced API 650 tank engineer from which to learn such details.

Thanks for ur reply. I m currently fabricating a square tank in accordance to API650 which require a flush type shell connection outlet nozzle. Based on Figure 5.14 from API650, i m facing a problem to make a connection between the shell opening (semi-oblong shape) and nozzle flange (circular shape). Just trying to figure out any specific item to make the connection between the transition. Sorry to say that its impossible for ur recommendation since the tank is 90% completed and the only thing left is this flush type shell connection modification.
 
API 650 does not provide design rules for square tanks which are a completely different technology. I hope you are simply saying that this round tank is as high as it is wide. Otherwise, I might suggest quickly and quietly running away before it fails. The transition between semi-obround and circular is an interesting exercise in geometry and drafting but it is not hard if you have done it before. Since you have not done it before, you will need to get help from someone or some company that has. Yes it will cost you but your only other choice is to do it yourself, perhaps in 3D CAD.
 
If it actually is a square tank, there's no particular motivation to use the API flush opening, modify it as needed.

This link should help visualize what that transition should look like. Actual layout will be more involved, and it'll be thicker than sheet metal...
