Hello all,

As the title of this thread, probably anyone here has expertise on API Q1.
I have read API Q1 on section 5.6 Purchasing, sub section 5.6.3 Verification of Purchased Products or Activities.
In this section, for critical components to verify them when we purchased them, we need use "specification", in this term, specification is meaning material specification so we may inspect that this component already conform with our spec or not.

But i have doubt that in this section we have obligation to provide material specification for all critical component, so the question is is it true that all critical components that already determined by our shall has material specification ?

Hopefully someone may give me input on this case.

No.

I'm assuming you're referring to API Q1 9th Edition with Addendum 2.

The requirement in 5.6.3 is for the procedure to include "verification that the applicable versions were used when specifications, drawings, process requirements, inspections instructions, traceability, and other relevant technical data are specified per 5.6.2 b)."

The intention of the requirement is that if you specify a specification in the purchasing information, then you have to verify that the applicable version of the specification was used. There is no requirement to specify a material specification for all critical components.

Note that per 5.6.2, the purchasing information shall "adequately describe the product or activity to be purchased" and this could include a material specification "where appropriate". This is not a blanket requirement for all critical components to have a material specification - it depends on what is appropriate for that component. For example, if you are buying material that will be welded into a pressure-containing product, then a material specification is likely necessary to adequately describe the material you are purchasing so that the final product will conform to the applicable codes and be safe to use. If a material specification is not necessary to adequately describe the material you are purchasing (this might be a part that won't contain pressure or experience any significant loads), then it does not need to be specified, and if it is not specified, it does not need to be verified. For most oil & gas equipment, a material specification is likely necessary to adequately describe the material to be purchased, but it might not be necessary for all.

Ok sir, thanks for the reply and explanation about this.

many thanks.
