API 653

I have sucessfuly passed the CWI exam without any prep classes, seminars, school etc. I am wanting to sign up for the API-653 exam in September. I have all the recommended practices in hand, but people seem to think its a lot harder than CWI and shouldnt be attempted without the a 7-10 day school.(codewest or wherever). Has anyone passed the 653 on your own-without any classes? If so, any suggestions that would help on how to study, that may be different from AWS ?
