40 years ago, a major tank company built a tank for my customer (I don't think the tank company is in business now). They now want to replace it in kind. The tank has a body cone with a compression stiffener. The original construction shows the cone welded to the horizontal leg of the stiffener and the cylinder welded to the other side of the horizontal leg.
I have found no detail in API 620 that shows this detail. In fact, details show the horizontal stiffener is weled to the exterior of the shell.
I know ASME UG-30 prohibits the cut in stiffener detail but does anyone know where this is addressed in API???
If we were to provide a cut in stiffener such as this, I will require a minimum of A516-70 plate with full UT exaimination of the horizontal leg of the stiffener to preclude laminar defects.
