API 607 Fire test - Material Qualification 1

I've recently fire tested a carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCB)valve to API 607 4th edition. Utilising this material covers all materials listed in table 1 of ASME B16.34.

I want to know how materials not stated in ASME B16.34 are qualified. The material in question is ASTM A494 CW6MC (cast Inconel), both the rolled & forged specifications are listed in B16.34 but the cast spec. isn’t. Does this mean I would have to fire test an Inconel valve? My sales director informs me that this is not common practice. Any help would be gratefully apreciated.

The question i have is whether the valve that you have is designed in accordance to B16.34 concerning it's pressure rating?

If the logic is that your valve design is in accordance with B16.34 and you need not do particular pressure tests to prove the material that you are using for the valve. Then the same logic could be followed to justify that a valve from this material should not be re tested to be covered by your API 607 test.

I believe that the letter of the spec should be folloed. If the material is not listed in B16.34 then a destructive test should be done to determine pressure rating and fire tests should be redone.

Who will be responsible in case of an accident, sales or engineering? It's easy for the sales department to argue for loosening of interpretations......they are not responsible.
