API-5L pipe callout?

I have a question about an API-5L callout for pipe. "IF" I had an API-5L-X60 callout for pipe, am I correct that a number of ASTM materials "could" be suitable to use under this API-5L callout? The API-5L callout is just a specification (a requirement of materials to carry a given commodity at a given pressure/temp./tensile strength). And that under API-5L-X60 …ASTM A106-B, A53-B, & A139-B "could" be used under this API-5L listing?
My main question is that the API-5L is just a specification and NOT a material callout like an ASTM listing? I’m use to dealing with pipe under the ASTM designation, and am trying to understand what the API-5L is about. …THX!

API 5L -X60 is a specfic material and I do not know of a substitute in A106. It has to do with yield strenght. The X60 means a 60000psi yield strenght. In A106 a grade C only has a 45000 psi yield.

A lot of pipe is co-qualified as A106 Grade B and API 5L X42, which means it has the metalurgy (Carbon and all that) that meets the two standards and it has a Yield strenght of 42000 psi (7000 psi more than required to meet A106 Grade B).

One problem is that ANSI B 31.3 doesn't recognize the 42000 psi and you need to use the 35000 in your design. (I wonder if they have or would change this?)

dcasto,
Just a point of correction with your reply. There is no Code listed or available called ANSI B31.3 The correct designation is ASME B31.3

I'm a simple guy and I normally just say, 31.3 or 31.8, 2145, 1104, section eight, 500, 58...... its the left brained engineer that rembers numbers, not names.
