I'm attempting to start a condition monitoring program for some backup diesel generators and pumps in our plant. The diesels are all basic inline 6's in the 300hp range @ about 1600 rpm. We currently use a datapac 1500 for our vibration route on the attached pumps. I have been taking spectral radings on the outboard and inboard locations of the diesels as well. I know that 1/2 harmonics of running speed indicate a variance in cylinder combustion, but beyond that I do not know what information is relevant from a spectral reading. I am thinking about taking time waveform data at each cylinder in hopes of gathering valetrain and clydinder health data. I will set up the transducer to be triggered at a set crank angle and then record 720 degrees of rotation. I think this will give me a "picture" of the combustion process in each clyinder. I would like any advice on the relevance of such a test and/or ideas of what else is possible with a typical vibration testing equipment. Thanks in advance for the help.
