Hi,

I was just wondering how many of you out there are performing FEA and design of large mechanical assemblies.

What are there the specific problems from your point of view?

I will start by saying, that in the traditional FEA software every design change requires reimporting the whole CAD assembly and more or less starting from zero again. I'm starting with this this point, because this the main focus in my company.

But I would also like to hear your opinion as experienced user.

Thank you very much!
Alex

In general every large assembly can be broken down into smaller assemblies for which the boundary conditions can be defined as forces or displacements.

Hi,
The latest version allowed for small assemblies to be instanced into larger assemblies. It wasn't that stabile on my machine.

There is also a plugin that does allow Abaqus CAE read and update model changes that occurs in SolidWorks parts. Link

The problem you describe is something I know very well. Once I spend 2 months on a model that got updated without my knowledge. Starting over was mentally difficult.

Thanks StefCon for the confirmation.

@Corus: So you prefer to analyze single parts by assuming the boundary conditions and loads. In my opinion this is not always easy to do, especially when performing dynamic analysis.
