An idea for a product/service, but no idea where to start!

I am a Marine Engineer working on board Merchant vessels, and as such have little business knowledge and am looking for advice on how I can start a new business from scratch. I have a product/service idea, but where do I go from here with regards to actual design, prototypes, funding, etc. Would it be easier to try and sell my idea to an existing firm, how much of the profits would I see, obviously I know that it would make me a lot less than setting up on my own, but can I afford to set up from scratch on my own?!

There are alot of abitious people here looking to make a dollar....if you're able to share what that idea is and have the cash to back it up there are people interested in making it work for/with you
