Amplitude modulation

Hi,

I would like to amplitude-modulate a microwave (0.5~10GHz) with ~1KHz square wave.
What is the best way of doing this without using an AM or a pulse function in a microwave sweeper?
I would appreciate if you guys help me with this and especially if you can tell me what kind of microwave component I should use for this.

Given that your modulation is a square wave and only 1 kHz, then you might be able to use a simple switch. By switch I mean a microwave component with SMA input and output connectors, and a terminal for the control signal. You'd have to make sure the one you select is capable of switching at 1 kHz. And this assumes you want 100% modulation depth.

This is a standard piece of test equipment used to modulate low power RF.

Search for "pin diode modulators" or just find your best deal searching "modulator rental". There's a bunch of rental places that sell modulators at a discount.

If your need is very simple, VE1BLL give a good though. You can find any rf switch, usually pin diode, say from minicircuits.com and purchase it, then just turn it on/off. Your 10 ghz upper frequency limit can add to the price of the switch so if you don't really have to go that high, the switch will be less cost.
