Hi all.

Do any of you use Alcoa-Huck Magna-Lok rivets in aluminum plate? Do you have any issues with blind side loosening because of the bulb shape providing virtually no blind side footprint? Is there a recommended blind side chamfer that could help this?

Plate thickness: 3/16
5083 aluminum
Rivet diameters: 5/16 and 3/8 (mostly due to existing hole sizes and grip lengths)

Any help would be appreciated...

If you believe what Alcoa states in their technical publications for these rivets, they perform better than other blind rivets when it comes to pin pull-out. Alcoa/Huck products have a solid reputation in the aerospace industry, so I don't think you will have an issue if you follow the design and installation guidelines they provide.

Hi tbuelna,

Are you sure you're not thinking of the Magna-Bulb? That one has more of a flat blind side print and resists pull-out better. For the Magna-Lok, I am concerned with high local stresses right at the blind side hole edge and potential loosening/water-tightness issues. I have never given this a second thought with other Hucks, such as C6L, BOM, or others. The Magna-Lok is more like a heavy-duty pop-rivet, which I have used in steel, but rarely in aluminum.

Are there any other ideas out there for a blind fastener, in aluminum, that leaves a round or truss head on the near side and has a decent blind side footprint?

You can try Avdel Hemlock or Huck MLS (NAS 1919/1921).

CoryPad,

Great suggestions - these actually work for my application, although they only go up to 0.25 diameter. I now just need to convince my client that aesthetically, the smaller rivet heads (than existing adjacent ones) will be OK.

Thanks!

No, I was looking at Alcoa-Huck Magna-Loks.
