I have a mild steel part that I need to plate for corrosion protection.

In the past I would have gone for zinc plating with yellow chromate. Nowadays however, chromium is viewed as uncouth.

So, suggestions for alternates?

Lots of options, depending upon the application & requirements. E.g.,
Electroless nickel,
Co-Sn electroplating,
Trivalent Cr passivation of the zinc plating,
Lacquer over zinc,
Powder coating.

Some suggestions for passing 1000 hours of salt spray testing are at You can also search other answers at this site, and get links to metal finishing chemical suppliers.

Depending on the part you could even galvanize some parts. Costs less and gives better protection.
