How does GTSTRUDL calculate the allowable weld strenght?
Does it consider the the allowable of the base metal?
We are designing Pipe Support using GTSTRUDL but in the
weld analysis it always give the weld allowable as 0.3x72ksi=21.6 whcich is the allowable (E70XX) electrode.

Thanks,
Ellie

I can't answer your question directly with regard to GTSTRUDL but can say that one need to consider the base metal as this often controls.

According to the Strudl steel design manual, it also checks the allowable base plate shear stress. The manual also says the report indicates if the weld or base plate stress controls. I don't know if all this has to be involved in a base plate command prior to a check weld command, I have never used this check weld feature before. I suggest researching in the Strudl steel manual or you could call Dr. Will at the CASE center and irritate him, he deserves it.
